Hurricane Irene makes solar owners think, “What If?”
The area that got hit hardest was the coast. But for the rest of us hurricane Irene was a close call. However it got me and thousands of others thinking “what if?” and go re-read our homeowners insurance policies. So are you covered? If you haven’t now is a good time to check. It’s important that you notify your HO insurance carrier when you do get solar installed so if you do have to file a claim you won’t have any problems.I’ve found with my customers that most insurance policies don’t charge extra when a customer initially puts solar on his or her roof.I’ve had one customer tell me that his policy would charge him extra after the first $30,000 dollars worth of his system and then they would raise it.The majority of the residential systems I sell are in the $20,000-$30,000 dollar installed cost. That covers 90 percent of residential solar systems. In a storm the biggest danger is that panels will fly off the roof or a falling tree will damage your system. In the Raleigh area of North Carolina PV systems are engineered to withstand 110 mph winds.Realistically if 110 mph winds came through it would cause a lot of damage to your home and property not just your PV system. In most cases you wouldn’t put solar panels near trees anyway because of the shade they would cause but if you do have trees that could potentially fall on your house or system now is a good time to do some site maintenance!
